In my art practice I explore the cognitive and communicative qualities of our bodies and their contribution to the development of meaning making practices. My artworks show a material bond between human bodies and earthy matter, bronze and clay suggest the continuous biological changes produced in nature as well as the development of human cognitive capacities through the use of hands. The study of the materiality of objects and their connections to the human body has a double aim, to see on the one hand how the habitat shaped individuals, and on the other hand how human interaction with the world could have contributed to the evolution of their kind.
By touching, grabbing and holding, our bodies sense our surrounding reality. My work hovers between abstraction and figuration, presenting gesture as the place where meaning and form respond visually to the external world, and where the human body is best represented as a physical conveyer of meaning as well as manipulator agent of materials and objects. Some of my sculptural artworks present honest and plain material qualities, which stress the processes undergone before their display. Evolving clay lumps shown together with bronze hands or old industrial and derelict objects seem to complement each other, building coherent links amongst themselves. By doing so, the calm hands acquire a new performative value: the gesture seems to have a function, a purpose with an end.
Delving into this subject further, I have recently worked on different surfaces to explore some of the qualities related to the materials I use with the aim to search for connections to my own body, or to my body experience of the materials themselves. Sometimes the combination of materials and marks resembled human skin, other times it was more similar to a combination of layers enhancing different sensitive experiences.
